Cell meets System

System integration and co-engineering for battery systems.

A battery system is more than just cells in a housing. The cell module, BMS, thermal management, and housing must function as a single unit – whether we supply the entire system or contribute a single component.

At Handtmann, the battery system isn’t developed in isolation, but collaboratively. We supply the complete system – or act as a partner for individual components, from the housing to BMS integration. Co-engineering means shared responsibility: from cell selection to series production, and with additional partners if needed.

What we do – together and in an integrated way.

Working together on the battery system – not just side by side.

In co-engineering, everyone works together toward a common goal: If you bring your own cell design to the table, you’ll get a partner who will make it ready for mass production. Those who need support with the design receive battery expertise drawn from our ongoing production. Whether as part of a team at the customer’s site or here with us in Biberach – we share the responsibility.

Cell, BMS, thermal management, housing – one system.

In the context of battery systems, system integration means that the cell module, battery management, thermal management, and housing are seamlessly integrated – as a single unit that functions equally well in the lab and in mass production. Instead of individual components that are assembled at a late stage, it is a system designed as a single, cohesive whole.

What Sets Us Apart in Battery Integration.

01 · Battery expertise from the current series.

There are many battery concepts out there. What matters is a system that can withstand mass production. With 164 MWh currently in series production, we understand cell interconnections, BMS integration, and thermal management from day-to-day manufacturing – not just from the specifications.

02 · More than just a supplier.

Co-engineering is a core part of our practice: We take on individual components of the battery system or the entire system, share responsibility for development, and support the project all the way through to production.

03 · Tested up to 1.1 MW.

An integrated battery system must be validated. Our test bench in Biberach tests systems up to 1.1 MW, 1,200 V, and at temperatures ranging from −40 to +90 °C. Whatever we integrate, we also validate.

Questions from project partners.

Yes. We can supply the complete battery system or serve as a partner in an existing development project – for example, for the housing, thermal management, or BMS integration. Co-engineering means getting as deeply involved as the project requires.

Yes – we integrate cells, modules, or components specified by the customer into a fully functional system. If necessary, we also coordinate with other suppliers and consolidate their contributions.

Yes. An integrated battery system must operate reliably even when produced in large quantities. We approach integration and industrialization as a unified process – so that what proves itself in pre-development also works in mass production.
